Vertel Announces Availability of e*ORB Middleware for Linux Operating Systems; Vertel's e*ORB Can Now be Used with Red Hat Linux 6.1 Software

Woodland Hills, Calif., January 11, 2000 – Vertel® (NASDAQ: VRTL), a leading global provider of carrier-grade network management solutions today announced the availability of e*ORB middleware for Linux operating systems starting with Red Hat Linux 6.1.
"By providing e*ORB software that can be used with Linux, Vertel is making it easier for businesses to offer scalable distributed applications using e*ORB and Linux," said Bruce Brown, president and chief executive officer of Vertel. "This is a great example of how e*ORB facilitates the use of Linux for telecommunications-grade e-commerce."
e*ORB is the first commercially available Object Request Broker (ORB) optimized specifically for the telecommunications industry. Unique among existing ORB platforms, e*ORB is compliant with the Object Management Group (OMG) specifications, and can be extended to incorporate CORBA features as required by the telecom market.
This scalability allows e*ORB to be embedded into a wide variety of network devices ranging from high-capacity optical switches and terabit routers to high-end handheld devices and set-top boxes.
"Vertel's e*ORB software enables the rapidly growing Linux market more opportunity to use CORBA," said Richard Soley, chief executive officer of the OMG. "Users don't want to be bound to only one platform or operating system. Linux offers another level of independence and OMG members are responding.
"The emergence of CORBA-conformant ORBs for Linux such as Vertel's `carrier-grade' e*ORB is a strong indicator of commercial confidence and industry support for both CORBA and Linux."
Linux is a popular freeware solution that is distributed by a variety of commercial software vendors, including Red Hat Software. This UNIX-based, powerful, fast, stable and scalable operating system is growing at an extremely fast pace and is one of the most popular solutions for server development environments and Internet providers.
Linux servers are expected to be found in e-commerce applications, ASP applications, database services, messaging services and Web-hosted services.
