Hills, Calif., March 8, 2000 Vertel® (NASDAQ: VRTL), a leading provider of mediation software for telecommunications networks, announced today that its e*ORB(TM) software will be deployed in Alcatel's next generation equipment. Vertel e*ORB software, the industry's first ORB (Object Request Broker) technology designed with the reliability (99.99999 percent), very high speed, small form factor, and platform independence required by telecommunications applications, will allow Alcatel to attain the demanding performance levels of today's communications networks.
"Alcatel's Infusion STP has been successfully deployed in a number of US and global networks to provide a robust SS7 network solution," said Henry Wasik, VP/GM of Alcatel's US Switch Products Business Unit. "Vertel is providing Alcatel with advanced communications protocol support and network service capability that will enable us to introduce new product features faster, reduce our initial time to market and provide high-speed communications within the next generation signaling and switch products," said Wasik
"We are pleased to continue working on such leading-edge telecommunications solutions with Alcatel," said Bruce Brown, president and chief executive officer, Vertel. "Our e*ORB software is being rapidly integrated into major components of the industry standard SS7 network. This is indicative of the need for telecommunications specific, state-of-the-art technology that e*ORB software fills."
On a public switched telephone network (PSTN) system, SS7 is used to set up, manage, and tear down telephone calls in a separate out-of-band network, rather than within the same network that the telephone call is made on. Using SS7, telephone calls can be set up more efficiently and with greater security. Special services such as call forwarding, caller ID, three-way calling, and wireless roaming are easier to add and manage. Traffic on the SS7 network is routed by STPs, such as the Alcatel INfusion(TM) STP, which act like packet switches.
During the company's multi-year relationship with Alcatel, Vertel has completed projects for billing call detail records; TMN-based management interfaces for Alcatel SONET & SDH networks, and created CORBA interfaces for Alcatel xDSL services. Last month, Vertel announced that Alcatel chose Vertel to develop a software component for the Local Subscriber Management Service (LSMS) that will interface with the Alcatel STP to provide Number Portability/Application Location Register (ALR) Flexible Routing solutions.
