Vertel Crafts Innovative Mediation Solution for Deployment to Nokia's GSM Network Management Architecture

Woodland Hills, Calif., April 26, 2000 – Demonstrating industrywide recognition for its strength as a mediation solutions-provider, Vertel Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTL), a leading provider of mediation software for telecommunications networks, today announced that an innovative mediation solution, developed by Vertel, has been selected by Nokia Networks' Operational Support Systems Business Unit to enhance the open architecture interfacing capabilities of their GSM network management system (NMS/2000) and third-party vendor management platforms.
In its current deployment by Nokia, the Vertel solution will serve as the mediation framework to enable easier manageability for system to system interfacing.
The Nokia decision to further enhance its own interfacing functionality with the Vertel solution is part of Nokia's objective to achieve even greater flexibility and faster time to market.
"We thoroughly evaluated a number of solutions-providers for this project and chose Vertel based on their experience in the development of management interfaces," said Matti Vanska, Nokia Networks' head of marketing for network management systems. "The Vertel mediation framework will complement Nokia's innovative management solutions, which are based on an open architecture and industry standards."
Vertel's mediation solution for Nokia is based on the Vertel Mediation Framework. The mediation framework provides a mechanism for the integration of diverse systems and the support of multiple network protocols. The Vertel development infrastructure, coupled with its expert development capabilities in the network management arena, results in mediation solutions that are fast (measured in mapped alarms per second), and easy to configure and maintain and provide an user friendly mechanism for integration management system platforms.
"Our success with Nokia marks another major milestone in Vertel's mission to lead the industry in mediation solutions," said Bruce Brown, CEO of Vertel. "Being the vendor of choice for telecommunications innovators like Nokia clearly demonstrates Vertel's understanding of carrier-grade requirements and our commitment to providing solutions that simplify the management of complex networks."

As evidenced by the company's growing portfolio of successful mediation implementations, Vertel's position in the multi-management solutions market is supported by its expertise in standards-based management technologies such as CMIP, TL1, SNMP and most recently, CORBA.
Vertel is maximizing its existing platforms as it continues to develop innovative, leading-edge OSS solutions for element management, network management, mediation and other advanced applications that focus on managing carrier grade IP networks and services.
"As we move closer towards network convergence, the need for high-performance, standards-based solutions for interoperability in multi-vendor environments will become a critical competitive factor," Brown observed. "Vertel's strength in mediation will be the basis for a new generation of network management solutions that will make carrier-grade IP networks a reality."
