Vertel Unveils Java Edition of e*ORB Mediation Software

New Product Brings Speed of e*ORB Together with Java's Platform-Neutral Development Environment for First Time

Woodland Hills, Calif., September 06, 2000 – Vertel® (NASDAQ: VRTL), a leading provider of mediation software for telecommunications networks, today broadened the potential customer base for its e*ORB core technology even further by announcing the availability of a Java Edition of its advanced, high-speed CORBA implementation.
The e*ORB Java Edition brings the speed of Vertel's popular mediation software to the Java community for the first time while moving the powerful e*ORB core technology into the rapidly growing Java market. In doing so, Vertel's newest CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) implementation successfully meshes the capabilities of two of the most widely used open system, platform neutral software development platforms, bringing developers the best of both worlds -- the speed of e*ORB and the rich development environment of Java.
Java is widely acknowledged as an ideal environment for developing high impact user interfaces and platform independent software. It also generally improves product time-to-market cycles by increasing programmer productivity and streamlining the actual software development process.
"This union allows software developers to write integrated applications in Java -- where they realize better programmer productivity and can include richer user interfaces -- and still preserve application performance levels by using the C++ language for performance critical components," explained Patrick Tao, Vertel's vice president of product marketing. "e*ORB Java Edition solves the complexities of knitting these developer environments together into one completely integrated application."
The newest addition to Vertel's line gives the company the industry's only integrated Java and C++ CORBA products designed for use in high-performance embedded systems.
"Along with our recently announced, smaller e*ORB 2.0 product, our new e*ORB Java Edition is further proof of Vertel's dedication to serving a broad range of new and emerging markets where high performance CORBA software products are needed, but physical memory space is limited," said Cyrus D. Irani, president and CEO of Vertel.
The e*ORB Java Edition is the only Java ORB designed and optimized for use with embedded system environments like the VxWorks real-time operating system from Wind River Systems, Inc. In addition, the Java Edition's fully interoperating ORB is platform independent and has been pre-tested on a wide variety of other platforms, including Linux, Solaris and Windows.

JAVA Edition Benefits
Vertel's e*ORB Java Edition inherits the high performing, modular approach of the original e*ORB software platform, significantly extending e*ORB capabilities and power for use in embedded applications and real-time environments by integrating it with Java.
In addition to interoperability with any minimum CORBA 2.2 compliant ORB, the e*ORB Java Edition provides a pluggable transport framework that enables quick adaptation to mixed or changing software environments while still supporting a variety of line and message protocols. Portability features help streamline the integration of legacy applications, while pluggable transport and message formatting APIs allow for an almost infinite level of system scalability.
Vertel anticipates availability of the e*ORB Java Edition by the end of the current quarter. To facilitate evaluations, the software will also be available at quarter's end for download from the Vertel website, www.vertel.com.
