e*ORB Enhanced With First Commercial CORBA-Based Fault Tolerance Product; Vertel Forms Strategic Alliance with Eternal Systems

Woodland Hills, Calif., September 13, 2000 – Vertel® (NASDAQ: VRTL), a leading provider of mediation software for telecommunications networks, has formed a strategic alliance with Eternal Systems, Inc., that enhances Vertel's e*ORB advanced CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) implementation with Eternal's Fault Tolerance technology. Under terms of the agreement, the two companies will collaborate closely to be the first to bring to market an integrated product that combines the respective high speed, high reliability features of Vertel's e*ORB and Eternal's Fault Tolerance solutions.
Vertel will begin offering the first in a series of products based on the new Fault Tolerant CORBA standard this fall.
"Our customers are some of the biggest users of fault tolerance technology," explained Patrick Tao, vice president of product marketing for Vertel. In the past, developing fault tolerance features was a complex and highly specialized task. Now our customers can come to Vertel and use an off-the-shelf e*ORB fault tolerance solution that makes adding fault tolerance a breeze.
"Vertel and Eternal are the first companies to join forces to bring forward this kind of innovative software solution. We are pleased to be working with Eternal to bring fault tolerance to the ORB market," concluded Tao.
Companies developing and operating highly reliable software systems for telecommunications and network equipment manufacturers, for example, can now use these products to integrate fault tolerant features in a fraction of the time and with much less effort than when they build those solutions internally.
"Eternal is delighted with this partnership, which we expect to commercialize our Fault Tolerance products around the world," said Louise Moser, president of Eternal Systems. "Vertel has become a global leader in the mediation marketplace by providing revolutionary solutions like e*ORB, enhanced with fault tolerance."

About Eternal
Eternal Systems, Inc., developer of the Eternal Fault Tolerance Products, originated out of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with research funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The company was formed in 1998 to provide a platform for building complex fault-tolerant and evolvable distributed application systems using CORBA ORBs and standard operating systems that would make the development of such applications faster, easier and more affordable.
Eternal Systems was a key contributor to the new Fault Tolerant CORBA standard, which was approved in March 2000, and is the first to implement fully a solution based on that standard.
