Vertel Receives Purchase Order for e*ORB Developer Licenses From Large Wireless Manufacturer

Woodland Hills, Calif., September 19, 2000

CORBA-Based Mediation Software Licensed for Second Time in Recent Weeks by Another Large Telecom Equipment Manufacturer

Vertel(R) Corp. (Nasdaq:VRTL), a leading provider of mediation software for telecommunications networks, today announced receipt of an agreement to purchase multiple developer licenses for its e*ORB(TM) core technology from a large U.S.-based telecommunications manufacturer and government contractor. The customer has agreed to purchase e*ORB software for both the VxWorks and Windows NT operating systems.

This is the second licensing contract for e*ORB in recent weeks from a large U.S.-based telecom equipment manufacturer for use in a new wireless product. This most recent customer plans to install e*ORB within a mobile wireless networking system.

"This agreement is another step in the right direction for Vertel and e*ORB," explained Cyrus D. Irani, president and CEO of Vertel. "We believe that this agreement further confirms the acceptance of e*ORB and its small footprint as an exceptional CORBA-based platform for the embedded telecommunications infrastructure market. Our clients are looking for technology partners with high-performing technology and the customer support to back it up. We believe that we were selected for this project because of our reputation for delivering both."

While Vertel expects to receive some minor revenues in the current quarter of this year as a result of this agreement, the company has the potential to realize much greater revenues in future periods in the form of run-time royalties upon successful future deployment of the customer's products containing e*ORB.

"We are focused on customer acquisition and building a base of long-term customers," Irani said. "That's the best way for us to build a healthy revenue stream for the future."

About e*ORB

e*ORB is the first mediation software product of its kind to combine the interoperability of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) -- one of the most widely deployed middleware frameworks in enterprise computing -- with the performance, reliability and scalability required to develop and deploy integrated voice/data/video services over optical, IP and wireless networks.

Key benefits of that combination include a level of high performance that allows for real-time processing, a low memory footprint that makes it ideal for the kind of smaller CPUs increasingly used in handheld and other mobile devices, support for multiple communications protocols and portability across many operating environments.
