Woodland Hills, CA., August 10, 1999 – Vertel® (NASDAQ:VRTL), a leading global provider of multi-management solutions for telecommunications networks, today announced that one of its flagship software products played a crucial role in the success of a recent multi-vendor European field trial for dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM). Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s number one telecommunications company and the third largest carrier in the world, was responsible for the implementation of the management system.
“Proving the viability and effectiveness of vendor-independent management is a great benefit to the entire carrier community. We’re proud of the fact that our work with Deutsche Telekom will open the door to a new level of business opportunities and efficiencies for the carrier market,” said Bruce Brown, president and CEO of Vertel. “We look forward to working with major carriers worldwide to help them reap the benefits of vendor-independent network management.”
“Vertel’s track record for providing standards-based interoperability solutions made them the natural choice for Deutsche Telekom,” said Georg Lehr, responsible for Deutsche Telekom’s activities in the project. “We needed a breakthrough solution to tackle this problem and Vertel delivered.”
The trial, which began in Fall 1998 and ended in late Spring 1999, was conducted using a prototype fiber optic network extending over 500-km (311miles), connecting sites in Germany and Austria. The study aimed to validate the telecommunications management network (TMN) management interface, which was developed within the research project to allow for vendor-independent management of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network elements. The TMN network management system, developed by Deutsche Telekom and based on Vertel’s industry leading TMNTelecore platform, was responsible for network element identification; configuration management of network elements through a series of graphical user interfaces (GUIs); and fault management to detect, correlate and isolate alarms throughout the network.
Vertel’s TMNTelecore Management Development Environment (MDE), which is being used by more than 25 industry leading customers worldwide, was chosen for its ability to seamlessly connect network elements from various vendors with a TMN-based network management system. Vertel’s comprehensive TMNTelecore products enable application providers to streamline the creation and delivery of integrated carrier-grade telecom services.
“It is extremely gratifying to have played such a key role in this prestigious and ground-breaking study,” said Brown. “We are excited to be recognized by international telecommunications innovators like Deutsche Telekom for what we do best – make complex and diverse network architectures work together.”
