Vertel Blazes Trail to Intelligent
Network Mangement
Global TMN Summit reinforces industry
vision and solutions for inter-operability
Woodland Hills, CA, March 9, 1999 – Telecom industry leaders
attending the 1999 Global TMN Summit came away from the conference agreeing
that continued development of automation and integration solutions for
operations support systems (OSS) is essential for the successful deployment
of new services in the telecommunications market. They also concluded that
TMN architectures, principles and products are critical to the deployment
of carrier grade IP telecommunications infrastructures and evolving services.
The role of Vertel as an industry leader in TMN solutions was evident by
the frequent customer references to their successful TMN based OSS deployments.
These messages, along with supporting data from numerous industry presentations,
provided the core content for the three-day Summit, held February 24-26
in San Francisco, which focused on “Intelligent Network Management.”
“Intelligent Management was a timely and relevant theme for this year’s
Summit,” said Bruce Brown, President and CEO of Vertel Corporation, the
principal host of the event. “Telecom service providers and network
operators are looking for solutions that provide faster time to market
of new services and lower operating expenses. The Summit provided
access to the vision, perspective and experience that will help accelerate
the industry’s ability to meet these objectives.”
1999 Summit
Attendance Reflects the New Landscape of Telecom Network Management
This year’s Summit attendees represent a significant cross
section of industry leaders, including inter-exchange and local carriers,
network operators, telecom equipment manufacturers, independent software
vendors, management solutions providers, applications development tools
providers, industry and financial analysts and government. Total
attendance, representing 23 countries, was nearly 500. “The strong
mix of industry sectors represented in this year’s attendees is proof that
these issues are of foremost importance.” Brown added.
Evidence that the market believes TMN plays a role in
managing public IP telecommunications was noted in the number of IP telecommunications
management presentations and the very strong presence of convergent carriers
and equipment manufacturers attending the Summit. Companies like
Sprint ION, Cisco, Bay Networks, Advanced Fibre Communications, Pairgain
Technologies, Williams Communications and the IP division of Northern Telecom
were well represented. There were also representatives from Level
3, ICG, and X-CEL Communications. Suppliers of multi-service access switching
devices, which play a significant role in convergent, high speed services
and internet deployment, were also present at the conference.
Summit Keynotes Share Vision
of Emerging IP Telecom Market
Highlighting the three-day conference were keynote addresses
from noted leaders in OSS development and implementation. Keynote topics
included convergence network management, interoperability of multi-vendor
TMN products, next generation access technology, OSS trends and trends
in the access market. Featured speakers included Bruce Brown, CEO
of Vertel Corporation; Michael Goettles, Sprint ION; Prof. Luoming Meng,
Chinese Ministry of Information Industry and China Telecom; Josie Goodale,
Atlantech; Eric Buatois, Hewlett-Packard; Rob Rich, Yankee Group; Bob Ferry,

& Matthison.
Vertel Solutions Make Strong
Showing Among Summit Presenters
A number of industry presenters made specific mention of
how Vertel solutions play a key role in the rapid, cost-effective deployment
of element and network management applications. Pathnet spoke about the
significant cost savings of their Vertel MDE based element management system
deployment using Windows NT Server. Architel described using Vertel products
on NT for their service activation software. China Telecom described how
Vertel solutions are a key component of its access network architecture
and indicated Vertel products are also being deployed by other Chinese
service providers, such as Zhongxim Telecom, Datang Telecom and Huineng
Telecom. Deutsche Telecom indicated that their Integrated Information
models utilized Vertel’s TMN products to assist in rapid prototyping.
“In addition to the honor of hosting the Summit, it’s pleasing to see Vertel
solutions being recognized publicly for their strong role in the build-out
of these new networks,” Brown observed.
Vertel has turned over the ownership and responsibility
of the Global TMN Summit to the International Engineering Consortium (IEC),
a leading provider of conferences, forums and symposia for the communications
industry. IEC will take on the program development, event marketing and
management of the Global TMN Summit for the year 2000 and beyond. Vertel
will continue to be the primary sponsor for the Summit and will play a
key role in developing themes and topics for future conferences. The Global
TMN Summit 2000 is scheduled for March 6-8, 2000 at the Fountainbleau Hilton
Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida.
