M*Ware™ Convergent Manager

M*Ware Convergent Manager includes a vast number of pre-built, off-the-shelf M*Ware services that perform FCAPS:

  • fault (alarm receipt, filtering, correlation etc.) management,

  • configuration management

  • performance management and

  • security (FCAPS) management functionality

All FCAPS services are implemented in compliance with public process standards (such as ITU M.3100). Attractive other features are included such as a detailed graphical inventory view on the equipment, sub network definitions, automated audit functions and flexible topology views.

Functions include

  • Reliable filterable alarm monitoring

  • Auto discovery (inside the network elements or covering whole networks)

  • Supporting different topologies

  • Advanced fault diagnostics, alarm correlation and root cause analyses

  • Inventory view of network elements

  • Service quality impact analyses

  • Multiple convergent configuration support services

  • Performance management crossing multiple technologies

  • Clear and consistent security

  • Real-time monitoring and analysis of network data to detect network or network element failures at the moment they occur

  • Powerful filtering and correlation to cut out "noise" and provide operators with a manageable number of real network impacting events.

  • Prioritization support to make the NOC professionals more effective in dealing with the issues that really matter.

  • Reduced Mean-Time-to-Repair by minimizing the time required to locate the source of problems. Also, through automatic diagnostics, the skills level required for initial problem diagnosis is reduced, allowing service providers to scale back on operations resources.

  • Reduced Mean-Time-between-Failures by enhanced statistics of network device performance

  • A convergent method of presentation reduces training needs and allows operators to be deployed in a more flexible manner across technologies, which reduces the costs of running a Network Operations Center.

All Processes supported:

Fault Management is provided and modeled after ITU-T X.733 and X.734 Recommendations, addressing various fault management features, including event aggregation, filtering, and flexible display. The fault management process can further be automated by using the alarm correlation service, the connection management service and self healing network management can be provided using the protection switching service (PSS).

Convergent Manager is collecting events from devices with the different regional Managers. M*Ware includes the widest range of network protocol, and equipment specific adapters. Monitoring may be passive, waiting for events to be forwarded, or active, configured to connect to and query a device at predetermined intervals.

The network event information is aggregated through the M*Ware ubiquitous bus. The basic M*Ware programmable network layer collects any type of network-, syslog and (other network management) application information. Once alarms are gathered, the M*Ware basic functions ensure normalized alarms and event data from a wide variety of sources into a single consistent form that can then be presented to the central server.

Event filtering can be easily customized to meet an operator’s operational environment. De-duplication and consolidation on the alarms provides operators with a reduced number of events to manage and the ability to more effectively manage event storms. The M*Ware Convergent Management GUI offers clear and focused displays and a color-coded visualization of alarm information. The alarm display can be categorized to organize events according to a wide variety of criteria.

Convergent Manager has a well-integrated topology interface. The Topology interface provides a graphical interface to monitor/view an existing topological network or to provision new topological networks.

To enable operators to repair problems in the shortest possible time diagnostic support is provided to see how alarms relate to other alarms.

The M*Ware Correlation Service provides decision-making functions to determine the optimal fault management process and network operators can view alarms that share common characteristics. M*Ware Convergent NMS can also launch third party tools in context to the event, enabling operators to work more efficiently.

Configuration and Inventory

The M*Ware Convergent Manager NMS offers customizable configuration functionality. M*Ware Convergent Manager offers standards based configuration functionality for various technologies including:

  • ATM

  • SONET/SDH

  • DS1

  • DS3

  • ADSL

  • OC3/OC48 and many more

These customizable components may be used for a variety of Convergent Manager applications, which are capable of managing equipments like DSLAMs, Gigabit Ethernet Routers, Add/Drop Multiplexer, Metro Long Haul Optical Switches, DWDM Switches etc.,

Inventory management functionality is achieved by using the Convergent Manager Inventory Service. the Inventory Service is modeled after the ITU-T M.3100 information model, which addresses the creation and configuration of equipment, equipment holders, circuit packs and other associated components.

Services to ensure internal workflow, activity multicast and delayed activation can be used to automate configuration, services such as software management and audit provide full support for configuration/inventory consistency.

Performance Management

The Performance Management service definition is based on ITU-T Q.821 and Q.822 Recommendations, and provides a well-defined set of APIs that perform PM data collection, threshold monitoring, QOS violation notification, and history data management. Technology specific current Data and history Data classes can be inherited from existing GDMO Information models or defined using UML. The M*Ware Convergent Management System GUI enables users to view and analyze the performance data collected for a specific entity, such as the OC48 Facility. The performance data can be plotted using different graphs for analyses and forecasting resource utilization enabling you to offer the best possible level of service in a cost-effective manner.
